Four teeth relief!

I got all 4 of my wisdom teeth out. I cannot wait until I can eat real food again and do not look like a bruised up chipmunk.

Well, this was the big week for Emelia. She was slated to have all four wisdom teeth removed on Thursday. About a month ago Emelia went to the dentist because she was having some pain in her molars. In an appointment a couple of years ago the dentist said that she would need all four out likely by the time she was 18. Well, the pain she was having confirmed she was right on track—they would need to come up but not urgently. Not wanting to wait until it was really bad and thinking proactively about her Cheer comp season, she decided that would rather get it done sooner than later. That sooner turned out being this past Thursday because of a cancelation.

Right up until Thursday, Emelia was calm, cool and collected—not at all worried about it. In fact the only thing  she was worried about was having to go without food from midnight the night before all the way up to extraction time at 2:45pm. Thankfully after a couple of cancellations she ended up moved all the way to 11:00am. We were out of the house at 10:00am and there, ready to get started 10:30am. And thankfully they let us know that they anticipated the surgery would take fifteen to twenty minutes—in fact the recovery thirty minutes after would be longer. And it all went off without a hitch and she was out of surgery recovering by 12:12pm.

We were home and she was in recovery mode by 1:00pm. After she was allowed to, she went right back to bed to get in some much needed rest. She – with the help of Danielle – maintained a tight schedule with the pain management and ice packs to reduce the pain and swelling. She was definitely feeling some pain by the evening and by Friday the swelling started to ramp up. Still, she was no where near the horror stories we have seen or heard about. Remarkably by Friday we were already getting the “I’m bored’s” and she was feeling stir crazy. Thankfully her friends can to the rescue and visited her at the house and took her out for a drive. Today, she has probably felt the best she has, but still not 100%.

With that stress and worry out of the way and with the Saturday off work, Danielle and I were able to get out for another longer (45km) bike ride together on the Thames Valley Parkway. The weather was much warmer than it had been earlier this week, so the ride felt so much better. When we got back we decided to forgo the basement organizing we had originally planned in lieu of enjoying the weather sitting out on the front porch. It was a perfect way to end the week that while we didn’t really talk about sure was nerve-racking for us having Emelia under the knife. Sure they told us it was routine surgery and would go easy, but it is never is easy when it’s your kid and they under anesthesia—no matter how close to being called an adult they are!

The big story this week is obviously Emelia’s wisdom teeth removal. I was off for a chunk of last week and with this week being a shorter week I had to really push through to get a ton of work done in two days so I could take Thursday off to take Emelia to the dentist and help her after. I was able to work from home on Friday as well so I could be nurse while working.

Emelia was actually really calm and not overly nervous leading up to the procedure. She was most concerned about being put under and then the idea of not eating was making her most upset and stressed. She was really calm and ready to just get it over with. Her nerves kind of kicked in about 15 minutes before we had to leave but for the most part she took it all in stride. I was able to be with her right until they were to put her under and that kept her calm. From taking her back to the procedure room to taking her home was an hour end to end. By the time we stopped to get her some more soft food on our way home the pain was starting to kick in and we could give her dose one of her pain regiment. She has been on constant rotation of pain medication but surprisingly from day one she was able to sleep right through the night. As the days move one she has been able to stretch out the pain pills and feeling better. The only real issue at this time is still pain but the swelling. She is still not able to really open her mouth very wide and because of the pain in her mouth she is still dealing with soft baby level food and is really missing real food.

Thankfully for her friends she was able to get out and see people and they all checked in on her constantly the day of the procedure and the day after. She has such a great group of friends that have really been there for her. But honestly she is really missing seeing everyone. She was bored by the end of her first day post. Today she was able to go to her cheer gym to at least be there with her team and mark through but not able to actually participate at all. But she was happy to be back with her girls.

Tomorrow we are hoping she can get back to school so she can be around all her friends, back to a routine and out of her room. Every day she is getting better and happy we are on the other side of this and so grateful it was very routine with no complications.
