Horking into Fall…

I had a great weekend with my friends. We got to spend Friday at the Ilderton Fair and Saturday at Western’s HOCO.

This week the battle with the cold/virus that has made it’s residence in our household for the last month or so, regretably continued. It is ridiculous to think that it really started with Emelia all the way back in July and the cough that remained, lingered with her for the most part in dimishing but lingering ways until September! She’s tested multple times and confirmed it was not Covid. She had chest x-rays which confirmed it wasn’t pneumonia which was good. But the cough continued to cause her issues well into September. Our family doctor said that it isn’t uncommon for people who have had Covid to have lingering effects of colds a lot longer than we are used to. And it seems that is the case.

Danielle was the next victim in our household, and it got into her around the time we had a week off at the trailer. The bummer was it was still around the next week off we had at the trailer too. She didn’t seem to have it as bad as Emelia, but certainly the cough experience was the same for her. I – on the other hand – had a couple of days where I was sure I was going to be next but within a day it was gone and I was feeling okay. That happened a couple of times, but sure enough, the best part of it, the cough eventually sacked me too. And while not having any of the other crazy full-on cold that Danielle & Emelia got, the cough was annoying and lingered on and on. The worst part is that it really only affected me and got worst when sleeping.

Now, all three of us – knock on wood – are on the mend. But, this cold was literally no joke.

On the bike this week I continued to add to my year-long total distance ridden goal of 10,000kms this year. When I initially set this goal I thought it was likely I wouldn’t get to it as it was 1,000km more than I did last year, and last year I road a lot. But, I set it and thought I’ll see how close I would get. About half way through the year, it started to sink it that I just might be able to get it done. And in the last month I have come to realize that I am actually going to get there before the end of the year. As of my ride this morning I am currently sitting at 8,700km ridden, and only 1,300km to go! At an average of 25km done every ride, that will only take 52 more days. There are 94 days left in the year.

With my work schedule settling in to me fairly consistently having Saturdays off, it has meant that Danielle & I have been able to get out for some longer bike rides together. Which thanks to the cold hadn’t been happening that much. But, in the last couple of weeks, we have been able to again. Yesterday after having a bit of a sleep-in and take the morning easy while we waited for the light rain to stop before getting in a ride out to Byron and back to the north leg of the TVP to the tune of 46km. It was perfect, as I have said in the past gives us time to talk and enjoy the company. But the added bonus was with it being Homecoming weekend, we got see a lot of the Western students over enjoying the festivites.

Well the hope that I was finally 100% over this virus was shattered over last weekend. By the end of Sunday I was dealing again with the cough, heaviness in my chest and added to the fun was with my ears having sharp pains in both. So Monday rolls around and I reached out to my supervisor to ask if she was ok if I could work from home and explained what was going on. She asked if I was going to get into the doctors to finally figure out what was going on. I had already left a message to have the doctor call back to book. I was able to book in the next day and after seeing him he sent me to get an x-ray, put me on a puffer to deal with the cough and confirmed I had infections in both ears. After almost a week on the meds my ears are finally getting better and the x-ray ruled out a chest infection so I was clear to finally get back to the office.

So needless to say this week did not end up how I wanted. But there is a silver lining. By Saturday I was finally feeling a lot better and John and I were able to get out for a nice long bike ride yesterday. It felt amazing to get back out there. I have not been able to establish a real proper routine in a while so getting out felt incredible. The week for me outside getting better was bringing Emelia to her training and loving seeing her cheer routines come together. She is really loving both her teams and the routines. I cannot believe we are only 5 weeks away from their first competition it is coming up so fast.

Emelia thankfully had a great week, well mostly. I will go into that part in a few minutes. Emelia’s highlights this week were going to see her school senior football game at a rival school, the game was apparently amazing and the boys destroyed the competitor. The next big event that the group had been looking for a long time. She and her big group of friends all headed to the Ilderton Fair on Friday. They were there for hours and Emelia said she got to see a ton of her friends. The girls wrapped up the night with a hang out at one of her best friend’s house. And then the big event of the fall – Western Homecoming. With our location we are on the edge of the University which means the university parties. Emelia and her friends along with her best friends older sister headed out to HOCO. They again banged into a ton of friends. The night didn’t last as long as Emelia had hoped but it just made the girls more excited to be able to go next fall as Western/Kings students themselves.

OK now on to the ‘mostly’ comment, Emelia’s week was full of fun events with her friends and that is amazing. But a few days ago Emelia started telling me her molars were hurting a lot. Emelia doesn’t complain a lot about pain, she has a pretty high tolerance. So we knew she was hurting a lot, this goes back to an appointment a few months ago with our dentist. About 2 years ago we had Emelia’s dental x-rays done and they noted that all her wisdom teeth buds were coming in and likely within 2 years we would have to discuss her wisdom teeth potentially coming out. You can guess where this conversation is going. We were able to get a cancellation appointment on Saturday and they checked her out, got new x-rays and yes all 4 of her wisdom teeth will need to come out. It wasn’t an urgent we need to do this now but very soon. So we chatted it over and said before it got to the point of complicated I would like to explore getting them out sooner than later. Here comes the complicated part, Emelia is a competitive cheerleader in mandatory training requirements AND we are coming into competition season. So timing is hard. I chatted with the office staff and they had one more appointment for October 17th with the dental surgeon. It is not ideal but every other appointment meant she was going to be recovering at cheer competitions OR waiting until April to get them done. That was not an option so we are off in 2 weeks and she is getting them all out.

Needless to say it was a good and not that great of a week but we are all starting to feel better and Emelia continues to live her best life
