Exam week… Yay!

I will be so glad when my exams are over!

What better way to come out of a weekend Cheer comp where you were competing against the Worlds Teams for the first time then to go right into exams?  Emelia literally had Sunday to decompress and then it was right into a few days of last classes before exams got underway. Her first was on Thursday, the next Friday and then she even had the fortune of one last night (Saturday) at 7pm! Because she has accommodations they actually requested that she start her exam at 6pm to give her the extra, accommodated hour. That exam was the one in this week that had her the most stressed—I think largely in part because it’s also not her favourite course. Her final exam is on Tuesday is probably the most challenging – Psychology – but when it is done, then she is done until the new year.

Cheer gets a bit of a breather now that their next comp isn’t until the end of January so practices are focused on fine-tuning the routine and sharpening what they’ve made so much progress on. Emelia has been battling back problems that stemmed from a week before Cheer for the Cure where she tweaked it sleeping wrong or something. I told her, “welcome to old age” but she seemed to think she wasn’t ancient like me. At any rate it’s made for a lot of visits to our chiropractor and now to get her some RMT time as well as this week the muscles are super achy. The good news is after Wednesday’s practice she has a bit of time off to recuperate and get better.

With the constant barrage of snow squalls that we’ve had since the end of November, my biking has moved to completely indoors on the trainer and Zwift. Where last year that ate away at me more, this year as I look out the window and all of the snow, while wearing minimal kit (base layer and bib) and realizing how much warmer it is inside vs what it takes to ride outside during winter, I am at peace. It also helps that I handily have hit 12,000 kilometres already and am actually well on my way to tagging 13,000 kilometres this year. In fact as of today’s ride, I am currently 194 kilometres from hitting that!

This week, will be a busy one – Emelia has her final exam. We will be likely very busy at the store, and I am sure there will be a lot of wrap up for Danielle being her last week before Christmas break. And then on Sunday we have our Teeter Family gathering at Testza’s new place in Kitchener which will be great to see the whole family. Once we get out of this week, the next week should be a little slower for us. But, this year with the sizeable missing personalities in our family we’re going to prioritize savouring the moments we do get together and even trying to squeeze in some more where possible. Here’s to hoping!

Emelia has been slammed the last few weeks in school, not only is she in the thick of her final exams it wasn’t like she had a break leading into exams. The last three weeks has been one thing after another for her. The last week and a half of school she had at least 5 papers and one presentation to prep for, one being due two days before her final exams were to start. Then after a busy weekend at cheer she went right into studying for her exams. Emelia started off on the first day of exams and then she started off with three exams in three days. By end of yesterday she really needed a break. She and her best friends opted to take last night off, let she and Bri have their brains a break. They really needed this. Tonight she and Bri are back at it as they have their toughest exam Tuesday afternoon. Needless to say they are both ready for a serious break.

To add to the fun for Emelia is the fact that she is dealing with a long term issue with her back. Emelia has been a competitive athlete for almost 10 years, all in sports that have impact to your body. Part of the reason Emelia left gymnastics was a long term issue with her back, the training hours, repetitive training was causing a lot of nerve issues. She moved to cheer, and the back pain never really went away but it was better. The last few months it has been getting bad again, it started last year when she was still tumbling. This year she is on a non-tumble team but the high level of stunting and the fact that they are pushing these girls to their limit to achieve these skills once again Emelia’s back has been bothering her. The day before her competition last weekend a harmless motion felt wrong and she was instantly in a lot of pain. She could not really do much about it, we got her adjusted at our chiropractor and she took pain meds and pushed through. It was still sore but felt it might be improving, until last night, another harmless movement and she felt another pull, and the pain got a lot worse. Overnight it did not improve so I messaged the coaches to let them know that she could not do stunting today to ensure it did not get worse. Thankfully her next practice at cheer this week is their holiday party and she has two solid weeks off training. The hope is that she will be better by the time they are back at training in the new year.

Now to me, I am wrapping up my last week of work before the holiday break, thankfully things are quieting down as the new year is going to be a busy one. For the last few weeks I have been battling this virus that is going around. What started as a mild cold turned into a never ending cough. The cough and heaviness in the chest was relentless. I had fevers come on and then nothing for a week, but the cough would not go away. This past Thursday I started feeling worse, again felt like a low grade fever was kicking in and then my stomach felt off. I had fought taking anytime off but my body finally told me I didn’t have a choice. I woke in the morning soaked in sweat and caved and took a day off, messaged my bosses and went back to sleep for a few hours. Needless to say I needed the sleep, the rest of the day I didn’t move off the couch and crashed early again. Today I finally woke not feeling like I have been hit by a truck, I hope this means I am finally getting on the other side of this. It has been a long three weeks of this virus.
