Getting shit done!

This week was so busy, 2 papers, mid-term, presentation, 2 jobs, oh and cheer!

Well, this week was a week of getting shit done. Emelia started midterms a week ago but with this being the week before reading week, she was lined up with a ton of school deadlines, over and above her normal weekly itinerary of school plus work, plus competitive cheer practices. And, somewhere in there she managed to also squeeze in some semblance of a social life too. This week she had one midterm exam, two papers due as well as a group presentation. It was a lot for sure, but she soldiered through and did very well in spite of all the work stacking up, and yesterday she had her mark back from her Sociology exam on Friday and she got a B!

We finished Emelia’s basement bedroom suite some time ago which left the work that we wanted to get done to the rooms upstairs for quite some time. But, we also after that workload were happy to take a bit of a break because both the new bike room and the spare bedroom were rooms we could close the doors on and ignore for a bit as there was not immediate need to have those rooms ready for use. The main component of that, Emelia’s old bedroom and now earmarked as our new spare bedroom had become a piling room where we had jammed up with boxes and stuff because we could set it & forget it.

But, this week, that came to a head when we finally decided to take that project head on. And once we started, there was no turning back. The biggest thing was to finally sort through the stuff we had accumulated from Mom & Dad’s belongings as well as our years of collecting otherwise that had landed in this spare room. Yesterday after my bike ride, Danielle and I took that job head-on and we made some very serious headway in that that after a trip to the dump and twenty bucks, we had removed from our house some significant space-sucking stuff that we did not need.

While I was out for my club ride with LCC this morning, Danielle got to work at the spare bedroom and was able to work through the last batch of stuff that we needed to either take for donation or sort and store. By the time I got home from my ride, I had hefty load to drop off for donation. And that meant I could finally take the table that I had made years ago for the office and turn it into a shelf so that we could get the mini fridge over into the bike/workout room. And, with that out of the way, and the room in much better order, we finally have made a serious dent in the second wave of Emelia’s move to the basement. All that is really left now is finishing touches like paint and so on.

But while it was an exhausting couple of days, it feels so much better having these lingering steps out of the way! And I am pretty proud of the amount of shit we got done this week—Emelia included!

The last few weeks have been a bit crazy for all of us, Emelia especially. I am deep in my busy time at work. I have a few big projects that have kept me really busy, I am loving my new role, new campus and new team. It feels so amazing to be able to take the lead on big projects, and even more satisfying is that they are allowing me to be directly involved directly impacting students. It has been such a shift for me making the change from Western and I could not be happier at King’s.

With the big projects at work during the day it was a quick shift every night it was to be there to support Emelia with her really heavy schedule. We are so beyond proud of how much she has taken on and balances it all so well. This week she has both jobs, the ramp-up of cheer season as they are moving into competition season. But this week was the rush before Emelia’s fall reading week. Emelia had two large papers, a big group presentation as well as another midterm. All due this week. She somehow managed to be ready for all of the work and prepared for her exam as well. So far she is exceeding hers and our expectations for how she has adjusted to university and her grades have been strong. It has taken her a bit of an adjustment to see her grades not hit the same levels she is used to from high school. She is honestly doing so well.

After a really insane few weeks Emelia and her friends were beyond excited to move into Halloweekend. This is the weekend that Emelia lives for all year. She loves Halloween and loves even more going to Halloween parties. The parties started last weekend when she went to a few parties including one where she was able to see a lot of her friends from high school. This past weekend was shifting into university parties. Emelia and all her friends got ready and made their way to a university party near our place. The girls seemed to have a great time. The hope for Emelia originally that they would hit up another party last night but honestly I think especially for Emelia and Bri the last two weeks of exams, papers and presentations caught up so they opted for a quiet night with a few of their close friends to have a lowkey night. Honestly Emelia needed this quieter night, she came home and slept for over 12 hours last night, and man did that girl earn it.

For John and I, we had a rare weekend off together without needing to be anywhere so we finally dealt with a project we have been putting off for far too long. As John mentioned when we made the change in the spring/summer to move Emelia from her childhood bedroom to the basement meant that we had to move the stuff from the basement and old office somewhere. For the basement most of the items were moved into the old office and made an indoor cycling room for John. For the items from the office, and all the items that we had to sort after Helen passed away it meant that the new guest room was just a dumping ground. On Saturday enough was enough and we started first by tackling Emelia’s old closet, it was full of a bunch of clothes and honestly crap that she had not dealt with. With her approval she let me deal with that mess, with me sorting the mess we could make fast choices to donate, trash or keep. The end result was a Jeep full to the dump, a jeep full to donation and a much more organized starting point. After a few hours the room was finally looking like a bedroom. It was a lot of work but it has come so far.

Today I wrapped up a bit more in the room while John was out for his ride with his riding group, while I was at cheer with Emelia, John took on taking the pile to donation and organize the cycling room. So there is still more work to be done in the guest room, mainly hang some artwork and eventually repainting the room over the holidays. We are so happy to be almost done these projects that are honestly almost a year in the making. We will be so happy when it is officially all done.
