Among the rat race!

I got my first official job! At the movie theatre!

Today’s Cheer practice started with the team and parents getting the specific details of the judges’ feedback from last week’s comp. On Tuesday they got a little bit of the deets, but the in depth conversation was saved for today with parents there. What Danielle & I have learned is… that we have a lot more to learn about Cheer judging. They for sure didn’t get disqualified or a huge deduction as we initially wondered out loud last week. Ultimately, it came down to tumbling being a much smaller part of the scoring and that stunts are where they really need to focus as well as selling the sizzle. The other teams just did that a lot better. So, as soon as they shared that, they got right down to work and have already begun tweaking the performance. Thankfully they have 6 weeks until they compete again!

But the best news also happened this week! Emelia for the last few months has decided that she wanted to get her first official job. Now, she has done lots of babysitting where she made enough money to need a bank account, but this is the  real kind where she will have a pay cheque with deductions. She had put her resumé out in a couple of places, but the one that she really was hoping for was the movie theatre. Danielle worked at the movie theatre during university, as did Emelia’s Aunt Charlie during high school. It really is a perfect job for a high school student!

Well, last Friday she got called for an interview on Tuesday. We didn’t talk about it last week because we didn’t want to jinx it, and being her first job interview ever, she was certain she wasn’t going to get the job. Well, Tuesday came and Danielle took a very nervous girl off to it. As I was at work, and on my lunch break, they came and saw me and told me how it went when she was all done. She was up against some people who she said were in their 30’s so she pretty much assumed she wouldn’t get it. But, they said either way they would contact her by 9:30pm to let her know. I was so proud of her for taking on such a nerve-wracking experience, I remember how nervous I was at my first job interview at McDonald’s at around the same age.

She had two missed calls while she was at Cheer practice, so on their drive home, Emelia found out – low and behold – they were offering her a job! Her first day of work would be today for orientation and then two more training shifts this week. In fact, as I am writing this we have just come back from dropping her off at work. We’re so proud of her for taking yet another one of her courageous steps outside of her comfort zone and getting what I think couldn’t be a better first job in high school. She’ll have plenty of opportunity to make new friends her age and plus she’ll get to see movies for free. (And, so will we!)

Lastly, on the cycling front, I was able to get out on the bike a few times this week which was great. And one of those times, Danielle and I got out together and we did the big ride all the way to Byron and back to the tune of 33km—something Danielle would never have been able to do on her non eBike. With our ride yesterday that took me to 7 rides in the month of December which was the record that I set last year. With 20 days left in the month it’s not crazy to think I will break that record this year. It also took me to 11 months of the year where I managed to get at least 1 outside bike ride in. Next year I am gunning for all 12 months!

What a big week for sure. We started the week with a nervous girl who started prepping for her first job interview. Emelia had wanted to start looking for work sooner but we had asked her to hold off a bit until we finished the camping season and let her have time to settle in school and sports. So a few weeks ago she got more serious about things, she started to research exactly where she wanted to work. Some places she couldn’t apply for until she was 16 but the one she wanted the most was at the movie theatre.

So about 2 weeks or so ago she put another resume in at the theatre when she saw them posted online. And later last week she got the call they wanted her to come in for an interview. She was nervous and excited all at the same time. She decided for the time she would spend the weekend focusing on the compettion only and the shift to the interview after we got home from Oshawa. In true Emelia fashion she fretted and prepared for every senerio.

Tuesday I drove a very nervous girl off to her interview, she froze at the door for a moment and then after a bit of a chat she marched in ready. About an hour later she was done and she said she felt she did her best but with being the youngest by far in the group interview she had prepared herself with the idea that she might not get the job. So off to cheer went and she worried about the first practice back post comp while waiting for the call. As we got in the car after practice she had two missed call from the theatre, called them back and a very happy girl smiled as she got the job offer! She is so happy and excited for this. We are happy, it is a perfect first job for a teenager, she will work with lots of kids her age and come on a theatre is a pretty cool first job!

For me between driving Emelia all over I had a some huge projects at work coming together that has kept me very busy the last few weeks. I am happy to say that my huge event is done and it went off without a hitch. I was tasked to organize all the details for our first holiday party in 3 years. It was a lot of work but it went so well. Everyone had a great time! So with that done my projects are done until the new year. I can shift focus at work to other areas in our division to wrap up exams, admission offers and everything else that is going on. We are all busy and ready for the holiday break!
