Finding her sweet spot!

I have to say I am so proud of how I am doing in University. I am really loving my program.

As the university marks come in over the last few weeks from midterms, it is reassuring to see Emelia is really doing quite well. The latest was from a midterm paper for CYS which was submitted before her break and the mark came back this week and she got a 87%! She’s accepted that she isn’t necessarily going to get marks in the 90’s like she was used to in high school and starting to understand that he is doing very well for someone in their first year of university. When I asked her about her marks she told me, “well, high school Emelia would be upset with this mark, but university Emelia realizes that marking is a lot harder at this level“.

This week the focus at training for cheer significantly stepped up. The coaches I’m immediately enacted on the feedback from the Fall Classic last weekend and started to add to the routine to bring the skill significantly up. They even have an extended practice with a choreographer coming back in to add and enhance the routine to feature more complicated stunts to ensure they score well and are competitive in their division. The next comp comes up quick – in two weeks – so they will have their work cut out for them. Cheer for the Cure is a two-day comp so this will being the girls back to they way they are used to be measured with an opportunity to get the nerves out on day one and bring it all on day two.

With the return of snow and snow squalls in our lives in the last few weeks the cycling season has taken a turn towards indoor rides over outdoor ones. With the clocks falling back a couple of weeks ago, there isn’t a chance any more to get a ride in that starts any later than 4:30pm that won’t end in complete darkness. But, also with the snow, wet leaves and freezing temps, it also has thrown a safety wrench to outdoor rides more than I would like. But, my yearly goal of 12,000kms ridden this year includes outdoor and virtual rides and I am happy to report I am only 176km from reach that goal over a month earlier than the end of the year. Some time in the six days I should cross off 12,000km this year and I am damned proud of that!

The last few weeks have gone by in a blur. Emelia is busy in the thick of school, she is done her midterms but working on large term ending papers and projects, she is almost done the lion share of the projects as she is about to move into final exams. In a blink she is prepping to finish up her first semester and in about a month she will be done her finals and be able to take a much deserved break. Emelia has honestly blown us away with how well she has adjusted to school, she is stayed on top of all her work and her grades are showing this effort. After a bit of a rough start of midterms with her most demanding course being her first mid-term she has really settled in and her grades keep going up. This last week so got back two big grades back for her program course and both were As. She is loving her program and is excited for next term when she moves into her next term courses.

But with school she is also balancing work and cheer. Cheer has been a lot more intense than in seasons past. The stress of being on a World’s team has added to the expectations for the athletes and how the younger and lower level teams look up to their team. It has not been an easy start for sure. The girls are pushing themselves far out of their comfort zone as they are now against the best of the best with the top teams in Canada. It is a lot of pressure. After their last competition the coaches are really pushing them hard, putting the pressure on to max out their skills and execute really complicated stunts perfectly. We are hoping with extra work that the girls are ready for the next competition that is coming up very fast.

For me my work has been really busy, late October and November is really busy in my role. Today we had our Fall Open House at King’s, this is my first Open House at King’s since moving from Western and it was a record attendance day. The event was packed and we talked to so many prospective students. It was a great day and even though I have worked many open houses at Western this year I was able to be more in the thick of it, connecting with families and future students. I loved everything about it. Next week I am able to shift gears working our student awards ceremony and again working more with students and their parents. All the last few weeks have told me is that the move to King’s was absolutely the right one, I feel at home and part of such an incredible team.
