The end of the camping season…

I had so much fun at Homecoming at my school! I had a blast with all my friends!

As we fell headlong into the month of October this week we already had more plans to be at the trailer than we did in the entire month of September. Which for those keeping track at home a busy month of September kept us away from Auburn Riverside sadly for the entire month. In the weekend that saw us flip the calendar over, Danielle & I were able to sneak up for an overnight and then this weekend which was home to Canadian Thanksgiving started a week’s vacation for me. So we were up to the trailer Friday as soon as we could get there with the intent of staying there until today, Thanksgiving Monday.

Now mind you a lot of what we were doing the last couple of weekends was starting to get the trailer packed for winter to be put back into storage as this is the last month of the camping season—the trailer needs to be out by the 29th weekend. So this weekend was mostly focused on cleaning and packing up for sure, but it was also focused on squeezing every last bit of camping fun we could out of it. And, like the last few years, we have a Camp Thanksgiving Potluck with the Sherwood’s to officially say goodbye to another wonderful season.

Saturday morning after we all took a leisurely pace to the day we all got out on our bikes to ride the G2G Trail one last time together. While it was quite windy and there was a nip to the air, our spirits weren’t dampened. With that out of the way, the big plan for the day was to keep the fire going and to get to work on the Thanksgiving meal. Justin got the turkey in and we then spent the afternoon enjoying each’s other company, set to the backdrop of a campground turning all shades of red, yellow and orange as the season’s change. By the time dinner was ready, we were all ready to eat. Decked out in our campground chic finest (read: sweat pants) we sat around the picnic table enjoying the meal before retiring to the fire, or some of us to bed (read: me).

Sunday was much warmer and less windy so I got out earlier for a solo run on the G2G taking my full, usual 26km route to Blyth and back. The wind was way kinder and the temps much warmer when the sun was able to break through the cloud cover. The same could be said for today’s ride too, but I was just happy to be able to squeeze in what likely be my last rides on the G2G for this season as I doubt unless we get an unseasonably warm kick in November or December, I will be making a trip up there just to ride without the trailer as a landing spot.

Today, the real sad work began as Danielle started the work from one end of the trailer to the other, getting stuff ready that needed to come home. This part is always bittersweet because on one hand you’re getting another weekend of camping, but on the other hand it is with the mindset that this will be the last of this season. We didn’t get near as much time as we’d liked at the trailer but I think that case will always be true. But, part of the reason that is true is because we were doing a lot of other exciting things too. Today as we pulled out – our vehicles overloaded with stuff coming home – there was a little bit of a sad note knowing that one of the next times we’re up there it is to pull the trailer out to officially end the season.

This weekend we focused on everything we are grateful for. Earlier in the season when we were planning the fall camping trips John put in the request to have all of Thanksgiving weekend off and I booked the Friday before off. We wanted to make sure we spent one more extra long weekend for what will be our last camping trip of the season. Our plan originally was to head up the the trailer early in the morning on Friday but that changed when Emelia’s school announced that the highschool Homecoming would be the Friday leading into the long weekend.

Emelia has been all about everything at school to finally have the full high school experience. So we agreed she could go and John generously offered to stay home until 4:00 to take her up and I would head up in the afternoon to get things started. Friday by dinner both our family and the entire Sherwood family were all at the trailer and ready to take in last weekend at the park together. The weather was cooler for sure but we made the absolute most of it. We were able to spend every night at the fire, got in a ride on the G2G together. All in all it was the perfect way to spend our Thanksgiving weekend.

Today we spent most of the day preparing for the end of the season. It is always the saddest day—it takes so much work just to know you cannot escape to our favourite summer home for another 6 months. I wanted to take in as much time this weekend at the trailer because I know next season will be so different. The kids are all getting older, the Sherwood kids came up less this year and we know it will be the same for Emelia next summer. She still does love coming camping with us but she has hit that age when next summer she will have a summer job and will be spending more time with her friends than her parents. This is why we wanted to make the most of the summer—it is that last summer know you your child will go from being a kid to a young adult. Everything will change for us next year so I am beyond happy we got to spend the last 4 days together not only with our family but with Steph, Justin and the kids.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone, we hope you were able to spend this weekend spending the weekend with those you love. We were sad to miss time with family but we know have lots of family time coming over the next few months leading into the holiday season. We have so much to look forward to and be grateful for
