One sport to the next with this girl…

I was in my first Wrestling Meet and Tournament. And, I had a blast!

No sooner had we wrapped up the Cheer competition last week and it was right into the next sport: wrestling. Not only does she have two Cheer practices a week for four hours, she’s now since joining the high school wrestling team has four and half hours of practices on 3 weekdays now too! And add in that she had a Meet on Thursday and then a tournament on Saturday too. Suffice it to say, she got in her exercise this week! And she was zonked—she came home Friday after school and had a two hour nap on the couch! I should say so!

In her Meet on Thursday, she lost both of her matches, but as she was texting us updates (due to COVID, Meets are limited to competitors and coaches only), she answered the all to important question “Are you having fun?” with what every parent wants to hear, “I’m having a blast”. We’re so beside ourselves as this is something she has done all by herself – without her besties the twins – and without really knowing anyone on the team. This is stuff that even a year ago, we don’t think she would ever dream of trying! And this has been her approach ever since starting high school. To say that she’s embraced this new world and forging out on her own would be the understatement of the year!

While we talk about me for a minute I want to share something I’m super proud of. With the weather last Saturday and then again yesterday being unseasonably warm I was able to break (and then re-break) my latest season rides getting in not one but two rides in December. This takes me to ten out of twelve months this year was I was able to get out on the Thames Valley Parkway for my daily rip! As of right now December 11th is my latest ride, but it does look like the weather this week may afford me at least one more ride, outside. At some point when I feel like it’s all done, I am going to talley up how many kilometres I have put on my bike since getting it in May this year!

So, back to Emelia… This week she has another Wrestling Meet at Central High School on Wednesday. And she’s excited about that. She came home from her Tournament on Saturday telling us she wants to maybe try Rugby in the spring now too. However today she realized that may be a challenge as the season coincides with Track & Field which she also really wants to do. She’s also recognizing that she may not be able to do all that she wants, especially when she factors in how tired and busy that made her feel this week. But, we’ll figure that out when we get to those seasons. For now we’re just so proud of how much she is putting herself out there to do new things!

As you can tell from John’s post it has been a very busy week! Emelia is in full swing with two sports right now, both she loves for very different reasons. She decided a few weeks ago she wanted to try wresting and has been loving it since she started. It has brought out a whole different side for Emelia. The big one for us as her parents is confidence. And a bit of an assertive side which does not come natural to her. Emelia is learning to really speak for herself, to be sure of herself and to be confident that she can be her own person.

The transformation in Emelia over the last year has been life changing, she was mentally in a very dark place over the last year. Over the last few months we are seeing her come into her own, find a new happiness and comfort in her own skin that is making her parents not only happy but so proud. She has worked so hard to get where she is now.

The week started out busy right off the start. Monday we went over to the Sherwoods so we could watch the virtual competition results. Much to our happiness and pride the girls team took first place in a group of 7 teams!!!! We were thrilled for the girls and all their hard work paid off! We are so proud of them and the coaches! What I love about their cheer gym is that they are not resting on the first placement—they took the judges notes, scoring per elements and are making some changes to ensure that they are still standing on top of the podium at the next competition. The kids were back at practice on Tuesday and learning some changes to the routine to prepare for the competition in a few weeks.

The rest of the week was all about Wresting practices, Meets and Tournaments. Emelia had a great first experience, she even won her first Match at the weekend tournament pinning her opponent in 14 seconds! Today she was back and Cheer—I don’t know how she does it, she crashed hard and napped Friday after school so she is really working hard. With the last week of school, another Wresting Meet this week along with her Cheer Christmas practice and us wrapping up shopping through this week it is going to be another really busy week.
